Escape into Surrey
Epsom lies less than 20 miles southwest of London but is a world away from the city's hustle and bustle. From race goers to history buffs, retail fans to nature lovers, this lovely town offers something for everyone.
Don your best for the Epsom Derby!
Epsom Downs Racecourse is one of the world's most famous race tracks. After an 11 year ban under Oliver Cromwell, King Charles II witnessed England's first recorded race meeting here.
The Derby is held in early June, and attracts thousands of spectators. Even if you're not into horse racing, it's worth going for the carnival atmosphere, fabulous fashions and beautiful floral displays. You can even enter its Style Awards!
A walk down memory lane
The Bourne Hall Museum may look futuristic, but it's packed with treasures from the past. You can check out Roman archaeology, a 19th century fire engine and even some 1970s fashions. Although we use the term loosely… Afterwards, relax in its café or take a stroll around its pretty park.
Another unexpected treat here in the Surrey countryside is the Original Cockney Museum. It's a real Tardis, with photos from London's East End and some of the distinctive outfits worn by the city's 'Pearly Kings and Queens'.
Back to nature
Want to stretch your legs? Epsom Common is a nature reserve with more than 177 hectares! For somewhere a little smaller, try Rosebery Park in the centre of the town. This tranquil oasis has mature trees, benches, a pond and room to have a picnic.
The town's salty secret
Epsom has a long history of attracting visitors. In the 17th and 18th centuries, people would flock to Epsom to sample the healing effects of the local spring. An enterprising chemist then extracted Epsom Salts from the water.
This naturally-occurring mineral is now mined the world over. The crystals can be added to a bath to relieve aching muscles and promote sleep. We think the best blends are the ones infused with essential oils like lavender or with added rose petals. But then, as florists, we are a little biased!
