What are the UK's most popular flowers?
Around 87% of British homes have gardens, with Chelsea Flower Show being the epicentre of floricultural excellence. But what are the UK's most popular flowers? And which flowers bloom in which season?
Top 10 most popular flowers in the UK
A recent survey came up with the following list. Is your favourite flower included?
Joint 7th: Daisies
There's been a resurgence of love for the humble daisy in recent years. If you're trying to get the look in your garden border, try Mexican fleabane.
Joint 7th: Heathers
Bees love the delicate flowers of heather. Planting them yourself? Double-check whether the variety flowers in winter/spring, summer or late autumn.
Joint 7th: Lavenders
So-called 'English' lavenders are at their best from mid-June to the end of July. Plant them near a doorway to enjoy the scent.
Joint 7th: Tulips
Although they grace many UK gardens, tulips are actually native to central Asia. Part of the lily family, there are more than 3,000 different tulip varieties.
Joint 4th: Daffodils
Brought to Britain by the Romans, daffodils are the birth flower for March. However we don't use them in our bouquets, as they affect the freshness of other flowers.
Did you know?: Kate Middleton's wedding dress was embroidered with a design of daffodils, roses, thistles and shamrocks to represent the countries that make up the UK. Her bouquet even included some sweet William – aww!

Joint 4th: Peonies
Merchants brought peonies to the UK from China in the 19th century. They may only bloom for a week or two, but the 'pom-pom' look of peonies is impossible to resist. Peony plants can live for more than 100 years, so are a great investment.
Joint 4th: Hydrangeas
The 'petals' on hydrangea flowers are actually small leaves called 'sepals'. They're one of the rare flowers you can give to a hay fever sufferer. This is because their pollen is so sticky that it doesn't spread.
Joint 3rd: Sunflowers
These glorious flowers are actually made up of lots of tiny blooms. The flower buds turn through the day to follow the sun, in a process known as 'heliotropism'.
2nd: Poppies
Love poppies? Be glad you don't live in China, Taiwan or Singapore. These countries have banned poppy seeds so they can't be used to grow opium poppies.
1st: Roses
We would have voted for roses too! For centuries, they were only available in red, white or pink. But now there's a rainbow of colours and varieties.
Make sure you check out our How long do roses last? article for tips on keeping cut roses fresh.
Seasonal flowers: embracing nature's rhythms
In the 21st century, it's theoretically possible to fly in flowers from all corners of the globe. But just because we can, doesn't mean we should!
Whenever possible, we use local flower growers in the UK for our blooms. It means we are supplied with the freshest flowers. And our bouquets' carbon footprint is minimised.
Spring blossoms
It's so lovely when snowdrops start to appear, and the soft yellows of native primroses dapple the countryside.
Our Sweet Treat bouquet is an explosion of springtime colour, with seasonal red tulips at the heart of its design:

Summer beauties
In the British countryside, summer hedgerows are full of poppies and cornflowers and the scent of lavender fills the air. Our Sunflower Bouquet is its own burst of sunshine, surrounded by red carnations and blue veronica:

Autumnal wonders
The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is a key moment of the floral year. The last of the dahlias, chrysanthemums and asters jostle for space. Our Perfect Pink Bouquet looks wonderful in the softer light of autumn. Pale pink dahlias, white nigellas and ocean song roses paint a pastel palette of perfection:

Winter delights
For florists and gardeners alike, winter is the most challenging time to create beautiful floral displays. Outside, hellebores and winter jasmine bloom despite the cold. As florists, we may have to search further afield to source our flowers, but we still try to be as sustainable as possible.
Our Wild Side Bouquet, with its festive blend of 'Vandella' roses, burgundy carnations and pink hydrangea, is a popular choice in winter:
